Shadow Theatre
Roger Ballen & Andrej Lamut -
Roger Ballen's The Theatre of Apparitions and Andrej Lamut's Persona share a curious approach to the darkest parts of the human psyche.
Ballenesque, apart from describing Ballen's distinguishable style, announces something intangible, nondefinable, exciting, unnerving and dark, which permeates all of Ballen’s work. It addresses the uncomfortable ambivalence which the spectator cannot comprehend through sight alone.
On the other hand, Lamut's human figure is depicted as a shadow, a reflection, a distortion, and a dispersed body. The intangibility of the body can be understood as a metaphor for the Self, which resides beneath the image that a person presents to the world.
