Tilyen Mucik: Lumenflora

17th June–12th July 2025

Atrium of the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU), Ljubljana

Exhibition opening will take place on Tuesday, 17th June, at 7 pm.

In the Lumenflora series, the visual artist Tilyen Mucik presents experimental botanical photographs in which sunlight plays a central role.

Lumen prints are solar photograms created by placing organic material such as flower blooms, leaves and stems on photographic paper, which is then exposed to sunlight. The result are astonishing images created with light, the fruit of the artist’s tireless exploration of various factors, including plant materials of different thicknesses, (expired) photographic paper, exposure time and intensity of sunlight, the addition of baking soda, vinegar and soap... The photographs from the Lumenflora series are characterised by intense, nuanced colour tones and abstract organic forms – it is only upon close observation that we can recognise the details of plants, flower petals, elegant stems and tiny air bubbles. In the unpredictable lumen process, the world of plants and photography merge, directing the artist’s life path and continually inspiring her, which can be particularly seen in her keen approach to experimenting with alternative photographic techniques.
