Iva Suhadolnik Gregorin, I am not in this world to do labour: The Starting Points project
The Starting Points project is a long-term exhibition project of Galerija Fotografija gallery, which presents two selected young artists every year and grants them the opportunity to exhibit in the gallery's bookstore and introduce them to the art market.
The first selected artist is Iva Suhadolnik Gregorin, who presents the performance and ongoing project I am not in this world to do labour. This questions the individual and collective identity of the person doing the work, and asks whether it is even possible to imagine an alternative anymore. The project argues that change will come not by accelerating, but by slowing down and disrupting the fetishisation of work. The answer to a tired society suffering the consequences of capitalism is rest, not extra productivity. Our personal value comes from existence itself, not from the quantity and nature of our work. Our natural state is one of tranquillity and ease, not one of constant struggle and effort.
Iva Suhadolnik Gregorin (1997) is attending the undergraduate program at the Academy of Visual Arts in Ljubljana. Her fields of interest include film photography, performance, naive illustration and video. She has exhibited multiple times at solo and group exhibitions. In her projects she researches relationships, power relations, the influence of patriarchy, the gender binary, occupation of public/common space and topics in between.
