Real Photographs

The story I try to tell in every image is one of an encounter. Whether meeting with a person, a building, or a car, I want to give an account of my experience in the image. My field of interest is the real world. That does not mean I am an old school documentary photographer. Every photographic tool to accomplish the image that tells the story is suitable. My working relation to the truth is comparable to a documentary film maker’s: using elements of reality to recreate the wanted (personal) representation of it.

I do not like to mythologize: appearances are likely to be denied. The power of the photographic image is enormous: when you look at a photograph, the underlying reality comes to life in your head. This makes the medium a very powerful tool for the photographer. But the camera is a haphazard machine: it will record randomly what is in front of the lens when you push the button. It can be hard to control as a dog pulling you by the leash. My main objective is to overcome that inhibition of photography. I feel akin to the 17th century painters (especially the ones who use geometric perspective), who could control every square centimetre of their image. In doing so, I tend to make things look more real then in real life. The tension between reality and artificiality, between the ordinary and the odd, is my playfield.
