Storytelling with photography

Seeing comes before words. Since the child observes and recognises before being able to speak (John Berger), we offered photography to children from the Vodmat kindergarten as a tool for describing and understanding themselves and the world around them.

Photographs are not just a record but an evaluation of the world (Susan Sontag); they are footprints of our minds, mirrors of our lives, reflections from our hearts, frozen memories, and they document not only where we have been but also show the path we might take, whether we are already aware of this or not (Judy Weiser). And because we are made of stories even before we come into the world and start creating our stories (Richard Kearney), telling and listening to the stories creates narrative knowledge, which is unfortunately fading away from our school systems and giving space to scientific and technological knowledge (Jerome Bruner). At the same time, we are forgetting how important the story is for the development of our identity and recognition of the other’s identity, because when somebody asks us who we are, we tell her/him a story…

“To collect photographs is to collect the world” wrote photographer Susan Sontag in her book On Photography (1979). Children were doing exactly that through different activities that were and still are taking place in kindergarten. They were exploring hidden places in their environment, facing their perceptions of persons/events and comparing them with their friends’ views, becoming familiar with photography as a medium for learning, storytelling and reporting about events that happened, as play/hide and seek/riddle, as a tool for imaginary creativity as well as for facing their own traumatic experiences.

While taking photos they were enjoying themselves, playing and exploring; they took photos of their adventures and later talked about them, they were catching frozen moments and creating stories from them. They were using photos for documenting activities, for reflection, for storytelling about a particular day or event that happened. And last but not least, they were using the camera and photography as a medium for telling stories about their lives as well as for telling stories about their recognition of the other.
