Ballen, who is known for his critically acclaimed publications Drops, Small Towns of South Africa; Platteland, Images from Rural South Africa; Outland and Shadow Chamber, has recently finished a new book called Boarding House, published by Phaidon Press, March 2009.
The book focuses on the imaginary scene, the transgressional space of existence, of coming and going. He is showcasing and putting forward the evocative drawings and statuesque objects next to people and animals found in the house. Seventy-five photographs, the majority of them never published before, are constructed into images of drowsiness enhanced with rich detailing, sparks of black humour and the exploration of the artistic space. Ballen’s photographs are like travels into dreamlands, surpassing the boundaries between photography and the remaining art with their piercing and intimate interpretation of space. The foreword to the book was written by the curator David Travis, who brings Ballen’s opulent opus closer to the reader through selected works and the accompanying text.
The curator of the exhibition Paolo Sturiale has chosen six photographs of 50×50 cm format and two of 80×80 cm format to be featured in the exhibition at the Fotografija Gallery.

A selection of works from Ballen’s most recent line of photographs will be shown at the Fotografija Gallery. It is one of the earliest presentations from the Boarding House opus in Europe.
The author will be signing copies of Boarding House at the opening of the exhibition. There is a limited number of copies, which will be sold at a reduced price during the exhibition. You can ensure your copy by making a prior reservation at the gallery.

The day before, on 23th March the Jakopič Gallery is hosting the exhibition Retrospective 1982 – 2004.
