INSTAGRAM_WIP #3. Invited artist CAROL JULIEN: IN SIGHT AFTER 5

In march 2014 we have launched an experimental exhibition project @instagram_wip, Galerija Fotografija’s virtual exhibition space at Instagram. One of the outgoing points was how could an artist use Instagram and show his work literally  to the whole world.
We have invited 10 photographers/artists to participate in the project “Instagram – work in progress”. Some of them have already been Instagram users others had become due to this exhibition. But all of them were already  using also smartphones for their photographic expression and creation.
Between 11th and 22nd March 2014, each photographer had to contribute a photo a day made in the last 24 hours and uploaded it on gallery’s Instagram account @instagram_wip. The subject of the series was open.
 
We are continuing with the exhibition projects at @instagram_wip.
On 11th day of the month @galerijafotografija invites one artist who starts a series with 4 photos and then adds a photo a day which must be made with a mobile phone  in the last 24 hours.
The result is concentrated, instant making of series. Authors have to edit their work instantly.
Welcome to the brave new world vhere now is a demand. And no fear, remember the words from Gibson’s Neuromancer »it’s always now« and each time when you are not using the technologies but are instead being used by it, just turn it off.

Photography has never before played such a significant role as it does today. We live in the world where the experience of reality is mediated to us through all-present images. As the photographer László Moholy-Nagy announced around century ago knowledge of the photographic language has become as important as knowledge of the alphabet.
In its short history photography has experienced rapid technological development from heliography to digital photography. Since the first photography made in 1827 to the 1920s when large format cameras and photographic plates were mainly replaced by small format camera. That allowed professional photographer to replace the studio for the street. In the 1990s digital photography with image sensors and computer programs replaced film and darkroom. With digital cameras on smartphones, photography became accessible like never before . As well as for the photographer as for the viewer.
The biggest changes in recent decades have happened in the area of accessibility and speed of transfer of photography from the photographer to the viewer. Photography has become instantly accessible.
Today, when there are countless possibilities of publishing photographs, we talk about a prevailing visualization of culture and we wonder what impact does this phenomenon have on photographic art? What does it mean for professional photographers, artists?
Should an artist using photography take an advantage of all social platforms and networks so that his/her work can be seen all around the world immediately?
